A bit more about Greg Cockerill:

Described as the perfect blend of indie-Canadiana and commercial music by CBC Radio, The Greg Cockerill Band is now playing full time across Canada in support of their debut record “Summertime & Heartache” Fueled by an all-star, young but seasoned rhythm section hailing from across Canada, the music is characterized by its honest blue collar roots-rock approach. Frontman Greg Cockerill crafts simple songs reflecting the complexity of human emotion and relationships. “I write about my hopes and my fears, we play hard to try to get into these feelings with our audience” Cockerill states. Inspired by songwriters such as Dylan, Springsteen and Young, there is no mistaking the cultural lineage of the music as it rings with authenticity and urgency. After a recent move from Calgary to Toronto and whole new batch of songs in the making the next year of 2010 should be a promising one the Greg Cockerill Band.

There is no real true way to describe the music that is JoHnNy DoN’t. With such a wide spectrum of influences you could say that they play anything and everything that is entertainment, and with each song comes a new surprise and a an irresistible hook that commands your attention. With their high energy performance and comedic banter JoHnNy DoN’t never leaves a crowd disappointed… maybe slightly offended, but never disappointed. THE JUMP – Read the rest of this entry »

Beautifully Retro Guinness Poster/Ad Design

Beautifully Retro Guinness Poster/Ad Design

*Update: Added the Ottoman Lounge and The Garage*

I have wanted do this post for quite a while now but I didn’t have enough research, so I decided this might be as good as time as ever, seeing as it is St. Patrick’s Day and all. The post name is self-explanatory. Where in the city can you grab a delicious pint of Guinness? Well, as it turns out, only two places to my knowledge. Now, what I mean when I say “pint of Guinness”, I ain’t talking about from a can or something, I’m talking about on tap! This is also what I meant by research, I have only found it at two pubs/bars, but with that being said, it’s probably at some others. So if there is any other places that you guys/gals know, please comment so I can add them!

Original Joe’s

Not only does Original Joe’s have Guinness on tap, they also have a huge selection of other beers, house beers, and hybrid beers. View our review on Original Joe’s by Sean.

The Silver Buckle

This is one of my favourite pubs in the city. The laid back atmosphere, Dale’s Pizza attached to it, and Guinness – Combine those three things and you will have a full belly and a good night.

Here’s a bit of a different show; Playing November 20th, 2009 at The Ottoman is country rock group, Josh Cockerill with guests, The Warped 45s who are a bit more rock, but still have that country and folk sound to them. Both groups are Canadian and hail from Toronto, although I specifically listened to a song by The Warped 45s entitled “10 Day Poem For Saskatchewan” – in fact that is what their latest album is called. Which means they might have some roots over near here, more specifically, Josh Cokerill grew up in Alberta. The show will start at 9:30.

A bit about Josh Cockerill:

Toronto songwriter Joshua Cockerill found his country roots growing up in Alberta. After moving to Toronto, he took to writing and performing alternative country music, reflecting his western pride with an eastern big-city sensibility. After kicking around the local music scene for a few years, Joshua decided to break his piggy bank and independently finance his first recordings. “I’ve known I wanted to be a musician since I was ten years old,” says Cockerill, “You could say that everything I saved up over the years was preparing for the making of this album.”

A great independent music line-up going on Tuesday night, October 20th as presented by the Young & Pretty Folk Music Association. The cover will be $5 and will start at 9PM. It’s been a while since I’ve done a post for a Young & Pretty event, mostly because of my lack of knowledge on the great indie scene in this town, but also, there’s generally 1-3 shows happening a week so it’s hard to keep up on sometimes. The best source to get this information is on the Young & Pretty Folk Music Association MySpace page or by joining their Facebook group. This show features Young Galaxy, an indie-rock band from Montreal, Bend Sinister an extremely varied folkish-rockish type ensemble from Vancouver and lastly, Mordichia, a local band of experimental music fame.

Scatterheart last performed at the Ottoman Lounge a couple months ago and it looks like they are back for more. This time they will be playing on Friday, October 16th starting at 9:30PM at the Ottoman Lounge again. I should also mention that they were in the Medicine Hat even before that on their tour with Bif Naked. After the last show, a local blogger and avid-music-listener type of fellow, Chris did a couple blog posts on his site about the band and his experience with them at their last show which were an interesting read. Scatterheart, the band themselves, even did a full video blog about the Ottoman Lounge and their experience in Medicine Hat (video below) – talk about dedication!

Saturday Night, October 3rd at 9:30PM, The Perms will be playing live at The Ottoman Lounge. Local band, Planets will be opening for them. There will be the $5 cover charge as usual. The Perms are coming through Medicine Hat on their Western Canadian tour. An excerpt from a user review about The Perms:

If you want a great rockin’ head boppin’ pop album, Winnipeg’s The Perms latest “Keep You Up When You’re Down” will fit the bill. In fact this album pushes The Perms as a major player in the power pop genre. The opening single “Give Me All Your Lovin” is a catchy high energy song that sounds a bit like KISS meets Sloan. This is followed by the gem “As You Were” with a driving chorus and roaring guitars along the lines of the Posies or Velvet Crush. Both “Running Away” and “World To Me” continues to kick things up with harmonious guitars and vocals. The band flirts with a bigger arena sound on “You Don’t Know” but stop short of Bon Jovi/Def Leppard territory…  If the Perms were not on your radar before — now is the time to pay attention. A bit about Mobadass:

As a double platinum artist and 3-time Juno nominee, Mobadass’ Earl Pereira has established himself as arguably the most entertaining bass player in the country. Being the bassist and co-founder of one of Canada’s best live bands Wide Mouth Mason, Pereira has already had a successful career highlighted by numerous top 20 radio and video hits.

By 2004, Pereira felt it was time to put his energy and experience into a new passion. He founded Mobadass as a creative outlet for his distinct style of “island rock” music. This is a sound created by combining music of his two cultures, the Philippines and Canada with soulful reggae-rock and funky pop.

Blurb About Mojave:

Officially formed in early 2007, Mojave started as a side project from two members of Vancouver hard rock bands, Damsel Fly and Latitude. Having already spent a few years writing songs together, LJ and Paul had an entire album ready to record by the time their bands called it quits. Mojave’s sound draws from the bands previous rock background, but is softened with classical elements like viola and violin. Bringing the sound together is an eclectic mix of percussion. At the forefront are female vocals with delicately intertwined acoustic guitars – weaving melodies, telling stories.
