Big without being overbearing, intelligent without undue complexity, Stone Iris’s songs possess a strong melodic and rhythmic content that reflect the bands willingness to delve into life’s full palette of emotions.

Lately, the band has been in touring-mode as they have 50+ gigs planned from April to August – mostly to promote their newest album, Redemption, released earlier this year. A little more about Ross Neilsen & The Sufferin Bastards:

Blues never worked so hard or looked and sounded so good. Until it met Ross Neilsen To say that he is a dedicated, chronic over achiever would be an understatement. Never mind the recent Nomination for Best New artist for The Maple Blues awards. Never mind the two Rising Star Nods from CBC, or the back to back Blues Album of the Year Nominations by the East Coast Music Association. Never mind the fact that Ross Neilsen spent the last two years living out of his van on friends couches and fans floors so he could dedicate himself to his craft. Never mind that he released two albums in six months. Never mind that he is traveling with his band to Mississippi to record a new album in January 2010. Never mind that it’s being produce at Zebra Ranch by two time Grammy Nominated Producer Cody Dickinson of North Mississippi All-stars and Hill Country Revue fame. Ross Neilsen is out there doing it and he is not going to stop. 200 plus, four hour shows. 80,000 plus kilometers. three national tours. sharing stages with people like Buddy Guy, Black Crowes, Original P, Grady and Joel Plasket. All this in just the past year. This, is the real, old school kind of Artist. Write. Tour. Record. Tour. Repeat.

Scatterheart will be back in Medicine Hat rocking the Ottoman Lounge Sunday, May 2nd (tomorrow) at 8pm. $10 cover at the door. Don’t miss this show, it’s going to be amazing!

http://scatterheart.ca/

Scatterheart was previously posted about on our Scatterheart is Back and Scatterheart Live Tomorrow posts. A little bit more on the band and their high-energy style:

Scatterheart is starting a revolution! Armed to the teeth with LOVE, FEATHERS, and GREAT SONGWRITING they are fighting to make Rock n Roll fun again. “There’s no reason you can’t leave a rock show feeling happy!”, says Scatterheart lead singer Jesse Enright. “I spent my teen years in the rave scene dancing to great DJs and I was amazed by the amount of energy a room full of people can create… Love is powerful. With Scatterheart I wanted to create the same experience and energy, but with a live rock show!”

And that energy is building. Already known in Western Canada for their colorful ‘Love Rock’ shows that leave audiences sweaty and satisfied, the band is excited to take their new album ‘The Masterplan’ on the road and recruit more fans. “The energy when I’m playing with Scatterheart is the craziest thing I’ve ever felt.”, says guitarist Doug Fury. Fury, who toured for 10 years with Canadian rock goddess Bif Naked, is no stranger to huge venues and big crowds but insists that this is something different. “I feel like we have created a high energy, huge rock show, but with a positive vibe! We try to give our audience the excitement that existed in 70’s and 80’s arena rock. Where has the personality gone in Rock n Roll? We want to bring it back!”

Scatterheart isn’t afraid to take chances. The band loves the unexpected and their audience practically demands it now. It’s all about handstands during guitar solos, bubbles instead of pyro, and feathers instead of jeans and t-shirts. It’s powerful Love Rock delivered in a classy way, and by the end of the show the crowd screams… “SCATTERHEART LOVES ME”. Well, of course they do.

Adams Rib (adams rib) will be playing the Ottoman Lounge tonight (April 27th) at 9PM. $5 cover at the door.

“Passionate, driving, and very personal”, is what Eye Magazine in Toronto has said about the band. “Two things caught my attention – the singer must have written the music and his unique sound will soon be catching a bigger audience.” posted the Cambridge Times.

This is an act definitely pushing forward in the true indie spirit for ten years now with no signs of slowing down. Enjoy the music that has been posted and be sure to visit the website to find out more about Adams Rib.

SNFU - March 10

SNFU - March 10

SNFU, another classic Canadian punk rock band, is scheduled to return to our city on Wednesday March 10th, this time to rock the infamous Royal Hotel. On top of their always entertaining performance, they will be showing an exclusive screening of the new documentary Open Your Mouth And Say… Mr. Chi Pig, an in depth look at SNFU’s colourful frontman. If you’re not familiar with Chi Pig, he’s well-known in the punk rock community for his theatrical style show, full of obscure props and costumes. He is truly one of Canada’s best performers and stills rock harder than most bands half his age.

Tickets for the show are $15 (only available at the door), with a door time of 6PM. Joining SNFU are BDFM from Calgary and Medicine Hat’s own hardcore outfit Helltrack.

Three Days Grace - Image from Ticketmaster.ca

Three Days Grace - Image from Ticketmaster.ca

There’s a lot of big names coming through Medicine Hat lately, is this a sign of our city growing up?

Either way, Three Days Grace with guests The Used will be playing at the Arena in just over a month’s time on November 28th, 2009 (7PM). Although I’m not a huge fan of Three Days Grace myself, but their newest video (shown below) is pretty sweet; albeit, a bit lame in some ways. They are also a hugely successful rock band with tons of radio hits. Their last released album, “Life Starts Now” sold more than 6 million worldwide which is a nice accomplishment for the Canadian rock band from Norwood, Ontario.

The Used on the other hand are an American post-hardcore (punk/rock/emo for the laymen) band that is touring to promote their newest album, “Artwork” which was released on August 31st, 2009. It’s quite odd for me listing The Used as a guest considering they are definitely the more popular band and have also achieved Gold and Platinum statuses in more than six countries worldwide. I also quite enjoy their music.

Tickets are $44.50 (floor) or $39.50 (seats) or, supposedly, you can get a VIP package for this event. What that means, I have no idea, but it will cost you $250.00 or $175.00. Call 403-502-8777 for more details on those.

Uh oh, is this another semi-positive article about a non-My96FM event? Sound the Kim Johnston alarms! I kid, I kid. Some people will know what I am talking about.

Large scale punk rock is coming to Medicine Hat on March 12th, 2010!

One of Canada’s current, most popular rock bands, Billy Talent is on tour to promote their summer release of the album, Billy Talent III. They are touring with Canada’s Alexisonfire who are also promoting their summer release of their new album, Old Crows / Young Cardinals. Backing those two big names is the punk band, Against Me! who’s popularity has been rapidly growing since their 2007 release of the album, New Wave. Against Me! vocalist and guitar player, Tom Gabel has pushed this Florida based bands success with his unique lyrical voice and song structure.

The show is being sponsored and presented by ROCK 105.3. The three band line up are going to put on an awesome show. If you have not pre-ordered your tickets, then I strongly recommend getting them as soon as possible as they are now available at tixx.ca

Scatterheart last performed at the Ottoman Lounge a couple months ago and it looks like they are back for more. This time they will be playing on Friday, October 16th starting at 9:30PM at the Ottoman Lounge again. I should also mention that they were in the Medicine Hat even before that on their tour with Bif Naked. After the last show, a local blogger and avid-music-listener type of fellow, Chris did a couple blog posts on his site about the band and his experience with them at their last show which were an interesting read. Scatterheart, the band themselves, even did a full video blog about the Ottoman Lounge and their experience in Medicine Hat (video below) – talk about dedication!

Saturday Night, October 3rd at 9:30PM, The Perms will be playing live at The Ottoman Lounge. Local band, Planets will be opening for them. There will be the $5 cover charge as usual. The Perms are coming through Medicine Hat on their Western Canadian tour. An excerpt from a user review about The Perms:

If you want a great rockin’ head boppin’ pop album, Winnipeg’s The Perms latest “Keep You Up When You’re Down” will fit the bill. In fact this album pushes The Perms as a major player in the power pop genre. The opening single “Give Me All Your Lovin” is a catchy high energy song that sounds a bit like KISS meets Sloan. This is followed by the gem “As You Were” with a driving chorus and roaring guitars along the lines of the Posies or Velvet Crush. Both “Running Away” and “World To Me” continues to kick things up with harmonious guitars and vocals. The band flirts with a bigger arena sound on “You Don’t Know” but stop short of Bon Jovi/Def Leppard territory…  If the Perms were not on your radar before — now is the time to pay attention.
