Coats for Kids - West 49

West 49 staff Steve Bartu and Amanda Wheeler helping with the 11th year of the West 49 Coats for Kids campaign.

West 49 has kicked off their 11th year off their successful Coats for Kids campaign back in October, but there’s still time left to get your coats in!  This year, West 49 has been collecting coats for the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society. With less than 7 days to go, West 49 encourages tweens, teens and adults to add clean, insulated winter coats to the collection barrel until November 20th and receive $25 towards a new coat from West 49.

A bit of information on West 49 Coast for Kids:

  • Since 2002 more than 85,000 kids have received winter coats as a result of this program.
  • West 49 Coats for Kids campaign begins on October 17th and runs through to November 20th.
  • Coat collection barrels will be placed in each and every store.
  • Everyone who brings in a clean, insulated gently used winter coat to any West 49 store across Canada will receive $25 off any winter jacket.  Donated jackets will then be given to various youth shelters and charities across the country.

West 49 is also encouraging customers to share photos of them donating a coat in store through: http://coatsforkids.west49.com/2013/ via social media with the hashtag #W49C4K

On Monday July 15, at 7 PM, on the Esplanade Terrace, the Esplanade Museum is having a reception to open an exhibit, to celebrate a recent recognition and to celebrate its 62nd anniversary.

PORTRAITS FROM THE GOLDEN AGE OF JAZZ

Photographs by William Gottlieb (1917-2006)

The Esplanade Museum is pleased to present PORTRAITS FROM THE GOLDEN AGE OF JAZZ: Photographs by William Gottlieb, a fascinating exhibition of approximately seventy-five photographs on display through August 24 in the Heritage Gallery.

During the 1930s and 1940s, William Gottlieb photographed the contemporary jazz scene to illustrate his columns in The Washington PostDown Beat magazine, and other publications.  The photographic negatives were stored for more than thirty years until Gottlieb’s retirement in 1979, when he began printing the negatives.  The rest, literally, became history.  Gottlieb is now one of the most honored jazz photographers.

UPDATE

The event has been postponed due to the state of emergency in Medicine Hat from the flooding. The new date is Saturday, July 20th, 2013.

Medicine Hat Fan Roundup is back this year and is happening… tomorrow! The event is a one day expo in Medicine Hat for fans of anime, fantasy, sci-fi, video games, card games, board games, and pretty much anything else geeky.

You can expect lots of game playing, lots of anime, art, vendors, and plenty of presentations and workshops. You can kind of think of it as a mini Otafest.

Guests for 2013 include Force Start Comedy, The 404s, and featuring (as the special guest): James Davidge (of Driftwood Saga fame).

Go Skateboarding Day 2013On Friday June 21st, the world will celebrate Go Skateboarding Day (GSD), Medicine Hat, very much included! Grab your skateboard and head to Inland Skatepark tomorrow! I noticed while driving earlier this week that Inland Skatepark was getting some major renovations/expansions. It didn’t look like it would be ready for this event, but all signs point to yes!

West 49, in their normal fashion, are in full support of skateboarding locally. Visit West 49 at the Medicine Hat Mall parking lot starting at 5PM where they will be hosting a game of S.K.A.T.E. with the West 49 flow team. Prizes and give-aways will be available!

The Boarding House ‏will also be celebrating at the Inland Skatepark from 4-8PM. Expect a BBQ, music, prizes, contests, and more!

The producers of CBC’s new series, Four Rooms are hitting the road to find Canada’s most unique and valuable objects. The cross-country audition tour, which kicked off earlier this month, is stopping in Calgary (no, sadly, not Medicine Hat) on Saturday, June 29th. If you have an item that you think may be worth big money, then come audition for the Four Rooms production team! This new series is from the same producers as CBC’s other hit series, Dragon’s Den.

They are looking for people who want to sell an interesting piece and share their story with Canada.  This item can be anything from antiques, art, collectibles, fashion etc., as long as it’s a unique piece. The seller shows their item and negotiates with the Nation’s top buyers and then has the chance to make the deal of their life and walk away with some serious cash.

When: Saturday, June 29, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Where: Sheraton Suites Calgary Eau Claire, 255 Barclay Parade SW, Calgary, AB.

What: Bring your completed application form, which you can download online, along with the item you’re selling, or photos and other documents such as authentication certificates and appraisals.
