Water levels of the South Saskatchewan River continue to decrease, down by over half a meter since yesterday.

As river waters continue to slowly recede, the City of Medicine Hat advises that in conjunction with advice from RCMP,  no boating will be allowed for the next 24 – 48 hours allowing time for debris to pass downstream.

Water Levels in the South Saskatchewan River

Alberta Environment has upgraded from High Streamflow Advisory to Flood Watch for the South Saskatchewan River including the City of Medicine Hat. As peak flows from the Bow and Oldman Rivers make their way downstream, South Saskatchewan River water levels continue to rise and are expected to peak in the next 24 hours.  These high levels will be sustained for at least a few days.

Minor flooding in parkland areas is expected. Residents are advised to use extreme caution when visiting areas along the river. The rising river water levels and potential for bank erosion or sloughing is a concern, however no homes or businesses are expected to be at risk.

Municipal Works is conducting regular inspections along Harris Street and the areas surrounding the arena. River Road is closed due to the current high flow of the South Saskatchewan River but there is still access to the City Hall and Court House Parkades via Fourth Avenue. There is no access from Maple Ave.

Parkview Drive between Finlay Bridge and the train bridge has one lane open.  Parks & Outdoor Recreation continues to monitor trails and parkland along the river.

The City continues to closely monitor the situation and mitigation plans have been developed for low lying areas along the river that may be impacted.

Residents are advised to use caution around the river and motorists are asked to observe all road signs.

Sent in by Reid Edward Erb of the Sentinel Society

WHO?
My name is Reid Edward Erb. I am 21 years old and have lived in Seven Persons my whole life. In the fall I will be going to university to study physics. If all goes according to plan, I’ll be going into a Master’s of Architecture program once I get my B.Sc.

WHAT?
I am trying to start a secret society devoted to the general improvement of life in south-eastern Alberta. Of course, I’ve already put flyers for it all over town and told everybody I know about it on Facebook and now I’m writing this, so it’s really less of a secret society and more of a “secret” society. It will be called The Sentinel Society

WHY?
Lots of reasons, I guess. Like I said, I’ve lived in the area my whole life, and as much as I love it here, it’s pretty obvious that it could be better in many, many different ways. No doubt, if you’re reading this website, you probably feel the same way. This can be kind of a frustrating place to live! For most of my teen years, nearly all I did was fantasize about moving to a bigger, “better” city (i.e. Regina, Vancouver, Brooklyn), but now, having stuck around for a couple more years, I think that would be kind of a cop-out. As ridiculous and old-fashioned as it might sound, I feel that I’m duty-bound to stay here and do whatever I can to make Medicine Hat and the greater area a better place. I’m hoping to find some people who feel the same way.

HOW?
There’s a lot we can do to work towards a better Alberta! Right now I just want to get a bunch of people together to talk and listen to each other and try to figure out exactly what a “better Alberta” really would be. In the beginning we’ll probably just be trying to support and let people know about the people already working around town (i.e. local charities, local businesses, local artists and musicians). Really, there’s already a lot of great stuff going on around the Hat, and if people just knew about it, and knew they had a community behind them, it would really encourage them to go out and do something themselves! Besides that, I’d like us to organize some events in the community. Basically just try to get people excited about living here!

WHEN?
Our first meeting will be on Sunday, May 15 at 3:00 p.m. I’m guessing it’ll go for about an hour, but it depends on how many people come and how the conversation goes, I guess.

WHERE?
Meet me at the Riverside Memorial Park. I’ll be waiting under the cenotaph. After that we’ll take a bit of a walk around town and talk for a while. Walking has always helped me to think, and I think it’ll make for a more casual atmosphere besides.

Remember: you can make a difference! See you on Sunday!

Today we are reminded that around 60% of people (the real majority) aren’t happy with the results.

And again, because I am interested in what readers and visitors of Medicicine Hat Media voted, I present the following poll:

Who did you vote for?

Today we vote. We decide the leadership of Canada for the next few years. It’s all of our responsibilities to vote, especially if you don’t like the current state of affairs in Canadian Government. Where do you go to vote in Medicine Hat?

Simply follow this link and input your postal code. It’s pretty easy, so why not?

While you are at it, view our previous posts on the election this year:

If you aren’t sure where you stand and need some help putting your ideas and beliefs into perspective, try out this Vote Compass which will show which way you swing (or place you in dead middle of two parties like it did for me).

After going through a period of tons of posts, we have this, a silent lull. Most of this is due to less people writing on the site, and me being busy on other projects. Of course, I am referring to the fact that Sean, no longer lives in Medicine Hat, but in the traitorous town of Lethbridge; as such, he won’t be posting as much anymore (or at all), but let’s make him feel guilty. Just kidding, or am I?

That’s also not to say there isn’t anything happening in Medicine Hat, but I don’t see a reason and letting our readers know about park washrooms opening up, when you can get it from the City of Medicine Hat public releases. As always, I encourage you to submit what ever you have in hopes of filling this lull.

As of April 1st this year, Service Alberta is charging alot more for their services. Your driver’s license, land titles and corporate registeries are seeing a jump in cost.  But that’s not what is going to hit your wallet the hardest.

What will be a more significant cost to you is a brand spanky new fee for every photo radar, red-light camera or parking ticket written. Whether you get a ticket or not. Fifteen dollars for every one of those pesky buggers.

Why fifteen dollars?  What exactly does Service Alberta have to do in processing these tickets?  I don’t know, but it must be fifteen dollars worth of effort or they wouldn’t be charging it… all of a sudden… out of the blue.

The new fees will cost municipalities across Alberta, millions of dollars.  Calgary is looking at losing police staff because of the costs, St. Albert Councillors are discussing a tax increase, while Red Deer and other municipalities are lobbying for a delay in the implementation.

Medicine Hat City council was glowing a month ago over a budget that balanced with a 0% tax increase for this year.  However now, with Service Alberta collecting over a half million dollars from our city’s piggy bank… it translates to a tax increase of 1 percent.

Which leads one to wonder why there is such a shortfall with this Provincial Department?  I don’t know how Service Alberta ended up with such a strained budget, but WE are certainly going to feel it.

In an interview with the Medicine Hat News, Medicine Hat MP, LaVar Payne defended against Norm Boucher’s comments about him not doing anything for Medicine Hat.

Not only did he fail to defend himself, but the Medicine Hat News caught him in a lie regarding the Events Centre application.
