A couple weeks ago we were contacted by Rob Sparks of Shaw TV who stumbled across Medicine Hat Media and he so kindly offered to interview us about the website, so of course we took him up on the offer!
We met up with Rob at The Medicine Hat College one afternoon and after setting up his equipment, he asked some questions and filmed Vaughn and I talking about Medicine Hat Media, and after a couple action shots of us typing away on our laptops and some post-interview production, the commercial was ready to air.
Being on TV was one of the sort of milestones that Vaughn and I both share. It is kind of akin to our presence on the Internet, because once you are on either, the possibility is there for an unlimited number of people to view your work. Also, I am not just so cool that I wore my sunglasses during the interview, but in actuality, I asked Rob if I should take them off, as it was sunny, and he said to leave them on.
The commercial airs every now and then on Shaw TV (Channel 10), but thankfully there is YouTube and you do not have to camp out to see it.

I attended the play Helen on Monday, March 30th and on the whole I enjoyed it.
The cast were well versed in their rolls and acted them out to perfection and the set was well put together. The videography was well done and the sound effects were good.
My only quarrels are these:
The play promotes something that seems like a mix of Hollywood and Spartan culture; however, the only time this became apparent really was near the end of the first act, near the end of the intermission, and the start of the second act. During these events, one of the actresses “up and quits” and is replaced by another. Other situations are the main actress being modeled after Marilyn Monroe, and some mannerisms that reflect and parallel the attitudes and actions of present day culture.
These things aside, it was a fun experience to partake in and a welcome change to that of a movie or watching television. It is a different experience entirely to watch something on screen and know how many times it must have taken someone to get the line just right or act their part just right, then sit down to a play, that takes hours, days, or weeks to get down and present that just right for the audience.
It was a great performance, you, the cast and crew of Helen.

In brief: the Medicine Hat College’s Visual Communications grad show will be held tonight starting at 7PM. There will be a variety items in the exhibition including art, design, furniture, video, photography and more. There will be entertainment, food, and most likely some alcohol beverages. It will be held in the main Medicine Hat College entrance – it will be hard to miss.

Twitter Twittering Tweets. If you don’t already know somehow, Twitter is a social networking and extremely popular micro-blogging service that enables users to post short messages (or tweets) from their phone, computer, their own website and other devices. There is not a lot of people quite a few people and businesses that post regularly on Twitter that are from Medicine Hat. This post is another one of my famous lists, so here it goes:

That’s right, the MHPL uses Twitter to post updates and events happening in the Library. It’s nice to see a place you would think would be fairly old-school using this service.

Medicine Hat News has started posting links to their top and local stories using the “twitterfeed” web application.

Local web design and development company has just started using Twitter to post and will post a variety of things including finished/portfolio work, cool gadgets, internet happenings, and more.
From Womb to Cradle
The From Womb to Cradle posts about pregnancy, birth, postpartum and parenting information as well as professional events.
Memory Lane Computers
This local computer store and web development company uses Twitter to post about new stock, technology/computer news and other things.
I originally had a very large list here of individuals in Medicine Hat that post on twitter, but it just got to hard to keep up with. So instead, please take a look at who Medicine Hat Media follows (login required). We try to follow everybody from Medicine Hat, unless they have been inactive for months, then we usually un-follow them to keep our list active; however, we do try to keep all the businesses and organizations followed.
Well that concludes it, I hope you found some twitterers that tweet in Medicine Hat to follow or friend! Okay, I’m sick of saying Twitter related words now. One thing I did notice was the mass majority of Twitter users also have their own website, in most cases it is another blog which 99% of the time contains their Twitter feed in it. Visual Communications Students gear up for Lost & Found Art Exhibition April 3-12th, 2009 at Medicine Hat College. Every year the graduating students from the Visual Communications Program put on an end-of-the-year exhibition to showcase their work and the skill gained from the previous three years.
Lost & Found is the name of this year’s final exhibition. The students have chosen to have a “green” theme this year and are looking to recycle many materials used during the duration of the exhibition, including all the cardboard and corrugated board, which is used as decoration throughout the show.
“We are getting recycled cardboard and are planning to reuse it afterwards,” said student, Tobie Laliberte. “I just love working with the cardboard, with its natural look and flexibility.”

This year’s show will feature a wide variety of mediums including painting, graphic design, furniture design, illustration, video and photography. Each student is responsible for their own work to put into the show, along with the preparation involved in hosting their exhibition.
“Every student produces their own original work for the show,” explains Laliberte, “along with helping plan, promote and prepare for the event itself. The class is split into different committees and the work is divided amongst themselves.”
The Lost and Found Exhibition will take place April 3rd – 12th in the front corridor at Medicine Hat College. Attendance is free.

March 27th, 28th and on the 30th the College Players at the Medicine Hat College will be presenting “Helen: A Spartan Love Story”. The show will take place at 7:30PM each night but there will also be a matinee at 10AM on March 31st.

Written Description:
“What you might know about Helen of Troy, “the face that launched a thousand ships” is a ruse. Helen was in Egypt the whole time the Trojan War was being fought. Helen’s image was used as bait by Aphrodite to lure a foreign prince while Helen biding her time awaiting news about the war being fought over “her”. Helen’s rightful husband, Menelaus, is shipwrecked in Egypt and discovers the reason for his entire expedition to Troy (and it’s destruction) was a false trail. The new Pharaoh doesn’t intend to honor his father’s agreement to keep her safe but plans to force her to marry him instead. Will they escape Egypt in time?”
This stage adaption of Helen: A Spartan Love Story is a look into what might of happened if 20th Century Fox asked Marilyn Monroe to film this project. March is Nutrition Month across Canada. This year the national campaign highlights food to fuel active lifestyles and healthy eating tips before, during, and after activity. The Seminar of Champions will be hosted in the courtyard room in the Medicine Hat College on March 24th, 2009 from 7 to 9PM. Complete and detailed information on power tips, activity inspiration, recipes, guidelines for nutrition and ergogenic aids will be provided by a Registered Dietitian and a Certified Exercise Physiologist.

More fundraising today, second post in a row! Tonight, at 7:30PM there will be a open house informational gathering for Relay For Life by the Canadian Cancer Society at the Medicine Hat College (room #S159). The meeting will be an informational discussion about how you can join and help the program. The event itself is a fundraiser where teams of 10 participate for 12 hours in a overnight non-competitive relay, taking turns walking or running around the track. It will take place on May 29th, 2009 in Kin Coulee Park from 7PM to 7AM.

Originally posted and reported in length on the Mad Hatters blog, spider, the owner of The Mad-Capcs Of Medicine Hat started posting on his own site. The Alberta Foundation for the Arts will be hosting a workshop for art grants and funding on January 30th and 31st. This event is for artists and organization that want or are thinking about applying for an art grant. Individuals are asked to attend on January 30th from 3PM until 4:30PM and organizations are asked to attend on January 31st from 10AM to 11:30AM.
