First Annual Medalta International Cup Show

First Annual Medalta International Cup Show

From August 23 to September 28, Medalta is hosting its first annual International Cup Show in the Yuill Family Gallery. The exhibition features 150 pieces of artwork from 10 different countries. Saskatoon-based ceramic artist and international blogger Carole Epp juried the exhibition, which received over 450 submissions. The pieces, which all showcase the artists’ interpretation of a cup, showcase a wide range of styles and personalities.

The goal of the exhibition, according to Medalta Curator Jenna Stanton, is to “expose Medicine Hat to a wide range of artistic styles and show the creative possibilities that exist in an everyday object, like a cup.” The exhibition features both functional and non-functional pieces which take the idea of a cup to the extreme. According to Stanton, “we’re excited for this exhibition to push people’s perceptions of what is possible in ceramic art.”

Medalta has partnered with Medicine Hat College to emphasize the community-building aspect of the International Cup Show by offering one-month artist residencies & accommodation as well as a purchase prize for exceptional works of art from the show.

The Medicine Hat College Purchase Prize will be juried by Carole Epp, with those pieces becoming an identified part of the Friends of Medalta Society public collection. The Medicine Hat College has also offered one month’s accommodation to the artist selected to participate in Medalta’s one-month artists’ residency in the summer of 2014.

According to Medicine Hat College Director Advancement Mark Keller, “Medicine Hat College recognizes the positive impact of arts in our community. We’re pleased to welcome artists to the community and look forward to another success for Medalta.”

The Opening Reception for the First Annual International Cup Show is Friday, September 6 at 7:00pm in Medalta’s Yuill Family Gallery. The online sales gallery will be open at the same time. There is no charge for the opening reception and everyone is encouraged to attend and/or purchase a piece of work online.
