A Gallery of Decayed Memories

In an older post entitled, “A Final Adieu to the Medicine Hat Riverside Water Slides“, Skeet, shared his memories on the now closed and defunct Medicine Hat Riverside Water Slides. In a recent comment on that page, Dervil Bissima had this to say:

I lived in the hat in 1988, that summer i think i pretty much went to the slide everyday! there was the night slide that summer too. A couple years ago, i drove from calgary to med hat, hoping to check out the slide once again. When i got there, i saw it was all run down and closed which looked to have been for a long time! ( i even checked info online the day before i left. There was no indication that it was no longer operating!) I would suggest that the travel websites update their info. haha. Anyway, i wandered around the fence to the top of the hill and saw a hole cut into the fence, so i had to go in! I got some really cool pics of the slide that i once loved! (I can email them to you if you like. It was just really sad to see, and i have heard different stories why it closed. I would like to hear why it really shut down.

So without further ado, here they are:

I loved the waterslides when I was a kid too, and feel sad and nostalgic whenever I drive by the now empty hillside where they once stood. They were a great place to meet friends for the day with a picnic lunch or try to pick up boys!

The rumor was that the maintenance of the slides had not been kept up. And they were becoming dangerous. When they had to be fixed it was more than the owner of the slides wanted to spend… That is what i heard anyway. Cant confirm if it’s true or not

My husband and I are planning a trip from Seattle to see my family in Brooks. I wanted to take the kids to the slides. I am so sad that they are closed and run down. I have great memories of some really cool summers spent at the slides. Thanks for posting the pictures – good for closure.

It’s a shame. I had awesome memories when I was a kid there. My last memory was the year the tornado hit Calgary. That was the summer I got a pass and I could go anytime I wanted. Well it got really windy all of a sudden and I pushed it to the last second. Sand was hitting me and it hurt but I still had the best day every and was the last one out and of course I lost my pass in the rush to get home. It’s so sad to see those pictures now compared to the glory days when I was a kid.

I used these back in 1985.
    My god they were brilliant!!
Best one o liked was the “wild wet pigtail”.
Ime nritish, was in the Hat 2 years, back in England now.
You Canadians should have put a roof over it
And kept it alive, fibreglass can be replicated.
Such a shame, something like this..
Money should not be an object!!

I visited these slides in 1987 age 10 visiting my dad from England. I remember my time here so well and I’m really sad to see this now. At the time there was nothing in England that could resemble these slides, to be honest there still isn’t. Real shame. I hope that something else replaced the fun to help create many many memories for people x
