Dumb Intersection: Superstore vs. Future Shop
There’s a lot of dumb intersections in Medicine Hat. It is my sworn responsibility to bring them to light so I can make more heads shake as a result.
My first example in this series is between Superstore and Future Shop. For some reason you have to stop to turn right although nobody else has right of way in that lane since there’s a big cement brick blocking them. So why do I have to stop there? Who am I stopping for?
What were they thinking?

Just past Future Shop, you get stage 2 of this stupid intersection where two lanes inexplicably merge into 1 right after an intersection. I know people don’t pay attention to that “left turn only”.

I am pretty certain it is just a safety precaution, but it is still pretty dumb. Or maybe you have to stop for people who might go from the left lane to the right lane to turn into that car dealership?

Not too sure, but I suspect it might have something to do with pedestrians, although if this was the case the crossing should be clearly marked. The intersection(s) that irritate me the most are the South entrance to the mall. I can’t count the number of times I have committed a traffic infraction there purely due to the confusing nature of the roadways.

The person in the outer lane could switch into the inner right lane after that barrier so they can turn right at the end of that road.
If there were not a STOP sign there it could be interesting… Common sense here…

You also do not even have the map right, FutureShop is across the street and that should be SportCek, ATB, Peavey Mart… LOL!!

Anons, not sure what you are talking about there. I think you aren’t understanding where this is. This is BEHIND superstore, not in front of it, as the map clearly shows.

Also, about the other person switching into that lane. You can’t change lanes in the middle of the intersection. Well, I guess you could, but you would be in the wrong since it’s illegal.
