Name Our Pub!

Mad Jake's Pub & Grub

Mad Jake's Pub & Grub

I’m a little bit late on posting this one, but the pub/bar previously known as Stillethos and Tantric recently had a promotional campaign entitled “Name Our Pub” which ran a contest to rename the business under the new management and owners, Ryan & Nola Besplug and Kary & Darcy Oshynko. They are no longer an adult-orientated bar and boast lower drink prices and a new selection of “grub”. Their original promotional site, aptly named, “NameOurPub.com” now just forwards you over to their new site here. The pub is now named “Mad Jake’s Pub & Grub”, as suggested by Shea Karcha. There was tons of choices as shown in the Facebook group post.

I’m more or less posting this here because it’s a great effort on the new owner’s part to try something like this. Being in the semi-traditional market that Medicine Hat is, this new form of marketing and advertising rarely shows up in this town. Most of the contest, discussion and promotional all happened on Facebook – something else we don’t see a lot of; people in this city embracing new (and free) media to their advantage. I also agree with the change from an adult/lingerie bar to a more neutral, classy place. I never was in Stillethos or Tantric before, but now, I will definitely stop in there in the near future.

I thought their name, going by their store sign, was going to stay “???” forever. I didn’t get it until now really.

I dig their website layout and their logo, it seems fairly well done when compared to other restaurant logos/websites in town, like Rosscos chicken with pink eye, Cracked Peppercorn illegible sign, Ralph’s annoying country jingle, and so on.

The name Mad Jake along with their bulldog logo kind of reminds me of how the band Less Than Jake found their name.

Personally I enjoyed Stilettos, it was trashy enough to feel like I was doing something ‘wrong’ when I ate/drank there. That was it’s appeal and I think with the right management it could have been more of a success. With the Tantric renovation it lost all hope… no direction, no soul, and putting their girls in ‘classy’ lingerie just felt out of place in their semi-modern decor.

I hope Mad Jakes continue with their innovative marketing ideas, it was a great start and from what I have seen in their facebook group it looks like a fun place to party. It’s got my attention enough to give it a try next time I’m looking for a place to go.

I know this post is dated, but I went there for lunch a couple days ago…nothing has changed besides the ‘attire’ of the ladies. The menu has more to offer but isn’t any cheaper as they claimed.

It was busier then it use to be, a sign that more people are into it.

The food wasn’t great, but it wasn’t bad either. I can’t judge the entire menu on one item of course. The fries were great, cut from potato ‘in house’ and not the stringy frozen kind.

Overall I was neither impressed or disappointed…they didn’t give me a reason to change my usual eating/drinking places. That’s my 2 cents on Mad Jake’s.

How is the Cracked Peppercorn sign “illegible”?

The Cracked Peppercorn sign is hard to read because the print is small.
This was frustrating for the owners and a new sign is being made.
The Company that made the sign refused to fix it, so a new company is redisgning it.
