DeVine Grill

Over the weekend I had the immense pleasure of visiting DeVine Grill, one of the fine dining restaurants in Medicine Hat. After a friendly greeting by the hostess, Sean and I were comfortably seated in a secluded area of the beautiful patio, surrounded by flowers, lamps, and a picturesque fountain. Although we arrived too early to order right away (the kitchen doesn’t open until 5 p.m.) our waitress, Jen, met us almost immediately to get us drinks while we waited.

Although the menu is relatively limited, and a little pricey, the choices are diverse, with a variety complete enough to please anyone. The wine list in itself was quite expansive and I believe even the most experienced Wino would be able to easily find something they liked. Our food arrived promptly and didn’t disappoint. With frequent visits from Jen to assure our meal was satisfactory, the dining experience was excellent.

I have only one small critique, however, the proximity of the tables on the patio could be quite uncomfortable if the restaurant was busy. As we were leaving, the table closest to us became occupied and it felt a little crowded, like the previous intimacy would be nearly impossible.

All in all the experience was both exceptional and memorable and I’ll be sure to revisit many times in the future.

What I remember more than the quality of anything was how I was constantly on alarm for wasps. On a nice day, surrounded by beautiful flowers there were tons of them and the chairs were touching the nearby plants so it was impossible to avoid.

The food was okay, but the entire lunch was everyone dedicating a constant focus to watching the wasp crawling under the table and on someones shoulder and landing on the food.

I did notice a few wasps here and there but chose not to include it in the review on account of it is hardly under the restaurant’s control whether or not there are bugs on an open patio surrounded by flowers. Granted they could probably put up a wasp trap or something but really it comes down to a choice of eating in the open air and taking all that comes with it (wasps) or sitting inside and know there won’t be any such inconveniences.

I know lots of bars have problems with wasps because they are attracted to the beer and wine. This one place I know in Regina has wasp traps set up around the perimeter of the patio but I don’t think they work very well because we would occasionally get buzzes around us or hear a woman’s scream, haha. Also, I agree it shouldn’t be included in the review.

Beer-wasp traps work pretty well from my experience. We used them quite a bit at home in Regina and it wasn’t too long before it was full of not only wasps or hornets, but also some bees and lots of flies. Still, if a wasp comes down from above and not through a perimeter, can’t help that much.

So the menu is limited, however the choices are diverse and there’s a variety complete enough to please anyone? I guessing the number of options available are limited? Once you go a few more times you will realize that the menu changes quite frequently. Still waiting for the herb crusted rack of lamb to come back!

    Sean says:

Oh it changes often? I wasn’t aware of that.

Taylor and I both had the Caesar Salad with grilled chicken added in. I hope they keep that!

Rack of Lamb sounds wayyy expensive, like $40+ range.

    Taylor says:

Ya that was a pretty ineffective way of saying what I meant about the menu options. I meant the actual number of dishes was small but the choices themselves were very diverse. For example, there weren’t 3 beef dishes and only one chicken dish, for anyone else who is a little confused by that…
I sort of thought that the menu changes as many restaurants of that variety often have menu changes pretty frequently, but wasn’t sure. Good to know!

If the wasps facilities are done and those small critiques are eliminated then the devine grill will surely become “devine” for ever.
