Medicine Hat Media

Med Hat Photography Websites

Medicine Hat boasts a number of photography websites, but the thing that kind of gets me is that the sites are all generally pretty good. Often times when you search graphic design or website design, or artistry (especially artistry), the sites that come up on the front page generally are not that great in terms of both design, graphical content and running text, but searching “Medicine Hat photography” in Google yields a good batch of results. So here’s a small critique (design in mind) as well as the links:

I kind of understand that photographers want music on their websites to set the mood for their gallery, but on the whole, downloading large music files really bogs down the speed and efficiency at which you can browse their website. Often times the music might not even load up until halfway through your browsing, then you are left wondering where the sound might be coming from.

Five decent photography websites are as follows:

Lynnguistics

Lynnguistics

Pretty good site, my only quarrel is that there is a splash page; which generally people find a nuisance, and the navigation and other elements seem kind of randomly placed; however, once you get into the galleries, everything is filled up nicely with large images to really see what is going on. http://www.lynnguistics.com/main.html

Flare Photo

A nice elegant site at no mistake. Floral designs give a nice aesthetic and a simple to use navigation. What is more, while most artists and art teachers always seem to strive for seeing the work against a lot of white space, Flare Photo seems to relish using sampled colour from their photos for their borders, which is a nice and fresh change from the norm. http://www.flarephoto.ca/

Gainsboro Studio

Gainsboro Studio

Gainsboro Studio seems to sport a fairly easy to use website. Their photography seems a lot more stand-and-pose than the others in this post, which is not a bad thing at all for family portraits, wedding photos, or whatever you may desire, but that style may lack the certain spark of spontaneity. Great photos though. http://www.gainsboro.ca/

A nice looking site which is entirely done in Flash. A main concern about websites done in flash though, especially photography sites, is that if you are wanting to get portraits done, trying to decide where, and wanting your friends or family to see, instead of being able to link them to a specific photo, you have to invariably give them the main website link and direct them accordingly. Apart from that, it is a good site with crisp and intriguing photos. http://www.adayinthelifephotography.ca/

Madchen Studios

Interesting, the first photography studio that has their photos on white. A pretty nice site, especially their use of CMYK colour palette (I did graduate from design school afterall). Madchen Studios definitely captures the moment in their photos and range in style between maternity, babies, to glamour and graduation. http://www.madchenstudios.com/

I agree on many of your points, but I disagree regarding the name of this post. The title is Medicine Hat Photography Sites. This would have been more aptly titled Medicine Hat Photography Studio Sites. I was doing related searches this evening and I came across this post on Google. I glad I checked it out because it goes a long way towards convincing me I am on the right track. Hopefully soon this mysterious comment will make sense to you. Until then just think about it.

Regarding that mysterious comment I made on back on March 7th . . . did you think about it? If yes, then check out image-pot.com. We are looking for photographers and their pictures because that is what it’s all about.

I am hoping to hear some feedback and input on how this exceptionally cool idea can evolve.

Hello Larry, very cool idea you have there. I would love to do a post about it exclusively in the near future.

About the naming of the post, I’m not sure most of these sites can be considered “Studios” as you say as some of them are personal photographer’s websites. Which that in mind, do you have any other ideas?

Hi Vaughn, If you want to do a post on image-pot.com we can definitely set something up, the more people that find out about it the better.

As to other ideas, well, I have several but most of them fall into the “notagood” category. My ideas for Medicine Hat photography and photographers c/w web sites are all tied up in the premise of image-pot.com.
The sites in your post are all good in their own way but they are in fact mostly professional enterprises with the exception of Lynnguistics. There is nothing wrong with using the net to make money but why limit ourselves to one small aspect of what can be achieved using the internet. The internet started out as entirely text content, now Typography is beginning to play a huge role in successful web sites, but it will never and I would repeat NEVER be able to supplant digital or graphic images. That being said my idea would be to go to a web site that just blows me away with outstanding images. Show me what you can do and then if I am interested I will find the link to your contact information and we can talk how much for what.
